filling in an old fireplace with bricks

Just wondering the best way to go about it i have bricks, mortar and render to cover I just need a few hints on how to go about it cheers

Damo,

You will need to key in the new bricks into the sides of the opening - it will mean either using a special strip of metal screwed to the sides before you a start or knocking out some half bricks.

You will also need to install a DPM at the bottom of the hearth to ensure that you don't get any moisture rising up through the builders hearth which will be built onto the ground and into the new wall.

am i correct?
dont you have to have some form of ventilation
to old chimney when blocking it off
ie hit and miss vent/air brick ?

As I understand it you do or the air will not flow through the chimney and you risk damp on the chimney stack.

put a vent in the centre of the fireplace when you brick it up and when you cap the chimney, make sure the cap is vented so that air (but not rain) an flow.
