I'm looking to do my bathroom and rather strip off all the tiles and replastering I'm thinking about putting up new plasterboard on dabs over the existing tiles? would people recommend this and what type of bonding agent would be used?
thanks for your help

Hi Dave,
Is the re-plastering just so that you can re-tile? If so then it would be better to tile on tile.

Hello John,
I was just planning on painting the plasterboard but am having trouble getting a plasterer to do 1 wall - do you think i would be able to use the same adhesive you would use for tiles over tiles?

Dave,
The problem with sticking drywalling over tiles is that the glaze does not make that good a bond.
You could do what I did in my bathroom and remove the existing plasterboard wall (run a jigsaw up several of the grout lines to cut through and then peel back) and refitted onto the existing studs - only took me about an hour to remove the old and a couple of hours to put back with screws. The advantage of this is that you don't lose the 3cm of the old tiles and new plasterboard!

Re: drywall over tiles?
Hi Dave I'm a tiler mate and its never good practice to go over old tiles, definitely don't plaster over them. You see plaster can only take 20kg PSM(About 9mm tiles)plus you don't know how well the original tiles are bonded.
The best solution by far is to rip the whole wall off and re-board,as a pro I wouldn't contemplate doing what you originally said for a paying customer even if they asked.
Hope this helps mate
